Education and Training

The archiving of the digital universe...

In an analysis of advertisements for digital curation and related jobs, Kim, Warga, and Moen (2013) found the following characteristics asked for in terms of education and training of a digital curation professional.

A Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program was most frequently required or at least preferred, though some job postings required only an undergraduate degree, and a small number required a Ph.D. In addition to the degree requirements, many job postings specified programs, software, or particular skills, and, if not adequately covered in their degree-granting education, the job hunter in this field should seek to become trained in certain typical technical skills.

The average amount of preferred or required work experience was 2.7 years.1

Most digital curation jobs being advertised were within academic libraries, though jobs outside of this traditional library setting were found.
